Chapter 2 - The Viper's Nest

Absolute pandemonium broke out in the basilica. Cameras flashed as high-society reporters realized they were witnessing the greatest scandal of the century.

"Seize her!" Vivienne shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. "She’s a thief! She stole the Sovereign’s Ruby!"

Julian vaulted over the altar steps, his handsome face twisted in desperation. "Liana, listen to me! Give it to me, I can protect you! If they take it, my grandmother will kill you!"

"You knew!" Liana cried, backing away as Julian reached for her. "You knew who I was! You were going to take the ruby and leave me in the slums!"

"I did it for us!" Julian lied, his eyes dark with greed.

Before Julian’s hands could grasp the ruby, a heavy oak door near the transept burst open. A man stepped into the light, flanked by four heavily armed private contractors. He was tall, dressed in a midnight-blue suit, with eyes as cold and sharp as obsidian.

It was Dominic Thorne, the city’s most feared corporate raider and the sworn enemy of the Duchess.

"Touch her, Julian, and you will lose that hand," Dominic's voice was a low, lethal rumble that instantly silenced the room.

He walked directly to Liana, stepping between her and the Sterling guards. He didn't look at her like she was a beggar; he looked at her with absolute reverence. He offered his hand.
