Chapter 1 - The Locket’s Secret

The whispers in the basilica were a toxic hum. As Liana walked down the aisle, she could feel the burning stares of the city's elite piercing her threadbare chiffon dress. Julian, the man she loved, stood beside Duchess Vivienne at the altar. He looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, but his eyes were darting nervously around the room, refusing to meet Liana’s gaze.
Duchess Vivienne struck her ivory-handled cane against the marble one final time, demanding silence.
"Stop right there, girl," Vivienne’s voice echoed through the cavernous space, sharp and dripping with aristocratic venom. "Did you honestly believe you could walk into my basilica, dressed in rags, and lay claim to the Sterling-Vane dynasty? You are a stray dog looking for a gilded leash."
The congregation erupted into cruel, mocking laughter.
Liana stopped ten feet from the altar. She looked at Julian, waiting for him to defend her, to step forward and take her hand. But Julian looked away, adjusting his cuffs. He was a coward.
"Julian?" Liana whispered, the betrayal hitting her like a physical blow.
"It's over, Liana," Julian muttered, stepping behind his grandmother. "I told you to wait at the apartment. I never intended to marry you today. I just needed the locket."
Liana froze. Her hand flew to her chest, her fingers wrapping around the cheap brass locket Julian had fastened around her neck the night before. He just needed the locket.
"Take it from her," Vivienne ordered her security guards.
As two massive men in suits lunged toward her, a surge of pure, blinding adrenaline ripped through Liana’s veins. She didn't cower. She gripped the locket and yanked it hard. The cheap chain snapped.
"Don't touch me!" Liana screamed.
She slammed the brass locket against the edge of the nearest marble pew. The cheap outer casing cracked and shattered like glass. The congregation gasped.
It wasn't a cheap brass trinket.
Hidden beneath the fake exterior was a flawless, glowing crimson jewel set in heavy platinum—the Sovereign’s Ruby. It bore the unmistakable crest of the original Sterling bloodline, a relic lost twenty years ago when the true Duke and Duchess were assassinated.
Vivienne’s face turned the color of ash. The cane slipped from her trembling hand, clattering loudly against the floor.

"That... that is impossible," Vivienne choked out, her eyes wide with terror.
Liana held the ruby high, its crimson light catching the glare of the chandeliers. She wasn't a stray dog. She was the lost, legitimate heir of the Sterling empire. And the woman standing at the altar was a murderous usurper.
