Chapter 6 - The Trojan Horse

Julian looked at Claire in shock. "What do you mean?"

"For the last two years, I've been working a second job on weekends," Claire explained, pulling a plastic ID badge from her purse. "I clean the executive floors of Vanguard Enterprises. Beatrice hired a third-party contracting company. She never bothered to look at the faces of the people emptying her trash."

Marcus laughed, slapping the desk. "The invisible workforce. It’s perfect."

The plan was highly illegal, but they had no choice. That Friday night, Julian dressed in a dark blue janitorial uniform, pulling a low cap over his face. He and Claire pushed a heavy cleaning cart through the service entrance of the towering glass skyscraper.

They rode the freight elevator to the eightieth floor. The executive suites were completely silent, bathed in the eerie glow of the city lights below.

Claire swiped her master cleaning card. The heavy oak doors of Beatrice’s private office clicked open.

"The safe is behind the oil painting," Julian whispered, moving swiftly across the plush carpet. He pulled the heavy canvas aside, revealing a sleek, steel biometric vault.

"It requires a fingerprint," Claire said, her heart hammering in her chest. "Julian, we can't open it."

Julian pulled a small, clear piece of tape from his pocket. "When I was a kid, my father taught me how to bypass these. Beatrice is arrogant. She never cleans her own desk."

He carefully lifted a perfectly preserved thumbprint from Beatrice’s crystal whiskey decanter using the tape, pressing it against the scanner.

The vault beeped green. The heavy steel door popped open.

Inside sat a thick, black leather-bound ledger.
