Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

One year later.
The small, ivy-covered house in upstate New York was quiet, save for the sound of leaves rustling in the autumn wind. It wasn't a penthouse. It didn't have marble floors or crystal chandeliers. But it was filled with light, and it was filled with warmth.
Julian sat on the back porch, sipping a cup of black coffee. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans. He had liquidated his remaining, legally-cleared shares of Vanguard Enterprises, using the money to establish a non-profit legal defense fund for families torn apart by corporate bullying. Marcus Thorne was his lead counsel.
Beatrice was currently serving twenty years in a federal penitentiary for fraud and extortion. Victoria had taken a plea deal for the embezzlement, earning herself a decade behind bars. The Vanguard name, once a symbol of weaponized wealth, was now a cautionary tale.
The screen door squeaked open. Toby, now nine, sprinted out into the yard, holding a baseball glove.
"Dad! Pitch to me!" Toby yelled, his face glowing with pure, unburdened happiness.
"Give me a second, buddy!" Julian laughed, setting his mug down.
Claire walked out onto the porch, wrapping her arms around Julian from behind. She rested her chin on his shoulder, watching their son run across the grass.
"You did good, Julian," Claire whispered softly.
Julian turned, pulling her into his arms. He looked into her eyes, seeing the strength, the resilience, and the endless capacity for love that no amount of money could ever buy.

"No," Julian smiled, leaning down to press a kiss against her forehead. "We did. We built something real."
He stepped off the porch, grabbing his own baseball glove, and ran out to meet his son in the sun. The past was completely burned to ashes, but from those ashes, they had finally built a home.
