Chapter 1 - The Microphone Drop

Toby clamped onto the metal stand with both fists, his knuckles turning completely white. He didn’t just have words. He had proof.

The eight-year-old reached into the pocket of his tailored jacket and pulled out a sleek, silver smartphone. It wasn't his. It was Victoria’s.

"I heard her talking in the bridal suite," Toby’s voice echoed through the massive speakers, raw and desperate. "She didn't know I was in the closet. She left her phone on the vanity. I pressed record, Daddy. Because I knew you wouldn't believe me."

Julian’s heart stopped. The silence in the Grand Bellevue Hall was so absolute you could hear the wax dripping from the candelabras.

Toby tapped the screen and held the phone up to the microphone.

Victoria’s voice—usually a melodic, carefully curated purr—blared through the ballroom, sharp and dripping with venom. “I don’t care about the brat. Once the ink is dry on the marriage certificate, Julian’s trust fund defaults to my LLC. We ship the kid off to boarding school in Switzerland, and I never have to look at his pathetic face again. And if his trashy mother tries to contact him, Beatrice has already promised to have her arrested for trespassing.”

Another voice joined the recording. It was Beatrice, Julian’s mother. “Just smile for the cameras today, Victoria. Claire is broke and broken. She’s no longer a threat. Julian is completely under our control.”

Toby lowered the phone. The audio cut off, leaving a suffocating void in its wake.

Julian slowly turned his head. He looked at Victoria, whose flawless complexion had turned an ashen, sickly gray. He looked past her to his mother, Beatrice, who was frantically gesturing for the sound technician to cut the power.

"Julian, darling," Victoria stammered, reaching out a trembling hand toward him. "That… that is doctored. The boy is disturbed. Claire put him up to this!"

Julian didn't yell. He didn't scream. The betrayal was too profound, too absolute for noise. He looked down at his left hand. The heavy gold wedding band felt like a shackle.

With a sickening realization of the monster he had almost married, and the monster who had raised him, Julian slid the ring off his finger.

He didn't hand it to Victoria. He dropped it onto the marble floor. It clattered with a sharp, hollow ping.

"Julian!" Beatrice shrieked, finally breaking her stoic facade, rushing forward in her diamond-encrusted gown. "You cannot walk out of here! Think of the press! Think of the family name!"

"The family name is dead to me," Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, icy calm.

He walked down the steps of the dais, ignoring the gasps of the three hundred elite guests. He walked straight to Toby, kneeling down, and wrapped his arms tightly around his trembling son.

"I believe you, buddy," Julian whispered into Toby’s hair, his own tears finally falling. "I am so, so sorry." He picked his son up, turning his back on the altar, the wealth, and the lies, and walked out of the ballroom without looking back.
