Chapter 7 - The Janitor's Secret Passage

Daniel stared at the live network alert flashing across his workstation monitor at 2:10 a.m.

Arthur Sterling—the seventy-year-old Chairman of the Board whom Daniel’s late father had treated like a brother—had been the true architect behind the 2018 battery fraud and the murder of Daniel’s brother Lucas.

And right now, with Victor Vance arrested by Detective Miller, Arthur, Victoria, and Marcus Reed were inside the sixteenth-floor master server vault of the Carter Ridge tower manually executing a physical hard-drive overwrite while preparing to hand the stolen Aegis-Nine defense chip to a foreign conglomerate buyer before the 8:00 a.m. board meeting.

“Can’t you upload the black-box video from this chip straight to the FBI and the board members from here?” Elena asked urgently as Daniel copied the recovered files onto two encrypted titanium thumb drives.

“The video proves the 2018 murder, Elena, but to stop the emergency corporate transfer at eight o’clock and trace where Victoria hid the physical Aegis-Nine prototype chip, I have to plug a hardware override token directly into the air-gapped master terminal on the sixteenth floor before their system wipe reaches one hundred percent,” Daniel explained, pulling on a black tactical winter jacket.

He tapped into the building’s lobby security cameras from his phone and frowned deeply.

“Marcus already revoked my executive badge access in the system on the grounds of the pending board suspension, and he has twelve armed private security contractors from Blackthorne Risk stationed at the lobby turnstiles and the main elevator banks,” Daniel said grimly.

“Wait here with Dr. Cole and your family while I meet Detective Miller at the tower.”

Elena stepped directly in front of the foyer door, pulling her frayed gray wool coat back over her shoulders and tying her dark hair into a tight, practical knot.

“If you walk up to the front glass doors with two police officers, Marcus will see you on the street cameras three blocks away and smash the air-gapped server blades with a hammer before you ever get past the lobby,” Elena said firmly.

Daniel looked down at her in surprise, struck by the fierce intelligence blazing in the eyes of the woman who had always kept her head bowed around him.

“How else am I supposed to get to the sixteenth floor of my own fortress without triggering an elevator alarm, Elena?” Daniel asked.

For the first time that night, a faint, determined smile touched Elena’s lips as she reached into the pocket of her gray coat and held up a heavy brass ring holding four old-fashioned mechanical maintenance keys.

“You built the glass tower, Mr. Carter, so you only know the marble lobbies and the high-speed executive elevators,” Elena said quietly.

“I have cleaned every square inch of that building between midnight and six in the morning for three years—which means I know about the nineteen-thirties municipal freight coal tunnel behind the sub-basement laundry bay, and the unmonitored mechanical service dumbwaiter shaft that runs straight from the boiler room into the pantry wall behind your sixteenth-floor coffee station.”

Twenty-five minutes later, after leaving Maya and Roberto locked safely inside the hidden penthouse studio under the guard of two trusted off-duty homicide detectives Miller had sent over, Daniel followed Elena down an icy alley behind Wacker Drive.

Moving with silent, practiced precision through the blowing snow, Elena unlocked an iron storm grate behind the municipal steam junction, led Daniel past the sleeping loading-dock guard through the laundry ventilation corridor, and guided him onto the manual cable-driven freight platform used to haul linen carts between floors when the main power was off.

In the cramped, dimly lit shaft, standing chest-to-chest as the platform rose silently toward the sixteenth floor, Daniel looked down at Elena’s face in the amber glow of the shaft lights.

“Three hours ago, I followed you into a blizzard because I thought I was better than you, Elena,” Daniel whispered over the low hum of the steel cables, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.

“And tonight, you’re the only person in this city keeping my brother’s killers from getting away with everything.”

Elena’s breath hitched softly at the warmth of his fingers against her cheek, her dark eyes locking onto his for a heartbeat that made the cold shaft feel hotter than midsummer.

When the platform stopped behind the sixteenth-floor pantry wall, Elena eased the concealed service panel open half an inch so they could peer directly across the darkened executive corridor into the glass-walled server vault.

Inside the vault, Marcus Reed was holding a nine-millimeter pistol pointed squarely at the head of the night-shift IT director to force him to bypass the final encryption firewall, while Victoria Sterling stood beside her father, Chairman Arthur Sterling, holding the silver containment case of the Aegis-Nine defense chip!

Yet as Victoria opened the containment case to hand the fifty-million-dollar chip to the buyer standing in the shadows of the vault, Daniel froze in sheer disbelief—because the man in the bespoke navy suit waiting to buy the stolen defense prototype wasn’t a foreign agent at all, it was United States Deputy Defense Secretary Richard Vance, the federal official overseeingCarter Ridge’s government contracts!
