Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Black Box

Once Detective Miller saw the unmistakable diamond-ring indentation on the left-handed impostor’s finger—and heard Daniel formally state for the police record that Elena Martinez was an invited guest in his home who had stolen nothing—the detective immediately suspended the arrest warrant and hauled a sweating, terrified Victor Vance down to the precinct for questioning on filing a false felony report.

The instant the penthouse elevator doors slid shut behind the police, Daniel locked the security deadbolts and walked straight into the hidden architectural studio, where Elena was sitting on the floor beside the sleeping couch holding her breath.

“Did they leave?” Elena whispered, standing up quickly as Daniel held out his hand to help her to her feet.

“The police know the video was faked by Victoria Sterling, our Chief Financial Officer,” Daniel said grimly, leading Elena and her father Roberto into his adjoining computerized lab, “and right now, Victoria and Marcus Reed have called an emergency eight a.m. board meeting to remove me as CEO over the missing Aegis-Nine prototype and sell controlling interest in Carter Ridge Technologies to our largest foreign rival.”

While Roberto sat beside the desk in his wheelchair, Daniel opened the biometric wall safe, pulled out the scorched 2018 hard drive Elena had rescued from Marcus’s shredder bin, and carefully desoldered the intact solid-state flash memory module from the melted circuit board.

Working with the precision that had made him a prodigy engineer at twenty-two, Daniel slotted the raw silicon memory chip into a clean diagnostic reader connected to his workstation.

For thirty tense seconds, lines of green hexadecimal recovery code scrolled rapidly down the monitor before an encrypted directory from November fourteenth, two thousand eighteen popped open on the screen.

“Look at the first folder, Mr. Carter,” Roberto said, leaning forward in his chair and pointing a trembling finger at a file titled CUSTODIAL_TRUST_LEDGER_2018_2026.

Daniel clicked the file open and felt his blood boil as eight years of secret offshore wire transfers populated the display.

Starting the week after the 2018 lab explosion, Marcus Reed and Victoria Sterling had diverted Roberto’s one-point-five-million-dollar medical settlement into a Cayman shell company, and over the next seven years they had systematically skimmed fourteen point two million dollars out of the company’s custodial payroll and immigrant worker healthcare funds through Brody’s fake staffing agency.

Every single dollar that should have kept Elena from counting coins in the snow and kept little Maya’s lungs healthy had been stolen to fund Marcus and Victoria’s luxury lifestyles.

“Then why did Marcus try to burn this drive in the washroom sink at five-thirty tonight?” Elena asked, leaning over Daniel’s shoulder as the scent of snow and lavender soap from her hair drifted across his senses.

“Because of this second file,” Daniel said quietly, clicking on the encrypted video and audio black-box file labeled SUB_LEVEL_B_CHAMBER_4_NOV_14_2018.

As the high-definition laboratory camera recording from eight years ago flickered onto the screen, Roberto gasped and crossed himself, while Elena covered her mouth with both hands.

On the monitor, twenty-nine-year-old Lucas Carter—Daniel’s younger brother—stood inside the glass-walled battery testing chamber alongside Roberto Martinez and a third young engineer at 11:12 p.m., holding a clipboard of falsified thermal-runaway test results.

Through the chamber’s internal microphone, Lucas’s voice came through crystal clear: “Marcus and Victoria falsified the military safety data on these lithium cells to collect a twenty-million-dollar kickback—Roberto, help me pull the master server drives right now so we can take them up to my brother Daniel!”

Seconds later on the video, Marcus Reed walked into the outer control corridor, saw Lucas and Roberto gathering the drives inside the test chamber, and calmly hit the external magnetic lockdown switch—sealing the heavy steel blast doors from the outside while manually overriding the voltage regulator to pump ten thousand volts directly into the unstable battery bank!

Daniel gripped the edge of his desk so hard his knuckles turned white, watching in agonizing silence as the battery bank exploded on the screen, killing his brother and the junior engineer instantly while throwing Roberto through the inner observation glass.

“Marcus didn’t just cover up an accident,” Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with lethal fury, “he murdered my brother in cold blood when Lucas caught him selling defective batteries to the defense department!”

Suddenly, as the video camera in the outer corridor panned toward the exit doors right after the explosion, a second figure stepped out of the shadows beside Marcus Reed, holding the override key that had locked the blast doors—and when the person looked up into the lens, Elena let out a strangled cry and grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Oh, my God, Mr. Carter—look at the man standing beside Marcus on the night of the fire,” Elena gasped, her face draining of all color as she pointed at the screen, “that’s Arthur Sterling, the Chairman of your Board of Directors and Victoria’s father—and according to the live network tracker on your screen, they are inside the sixteenth-floor server room wiping the company’s master mainframes right now!”
