Chapter 5 - Left-Handed Coffee

“Take Maya and your father through that oak paneled door into my private architectural studio and do not make a sound,” Daniel instructed Elena calmly, sliding the scorched 2018 hard drive into the concealed biometric wall safe behind his bookshelf before the private elevator even passed the twentieth floor.

“What if they search the whole penthouse, Mr. Carter?” Elena whispered, her heart hammering visibly at the base of her throat.

“That studio isn’t on the city building blueprints, and nobody steps past my front foyer without my permission,” Daniel replied, buttoning his dark suit jacket as the elevator chimed its arrival outside his double mahogany doors.

Daniel walked into the marble foyer and pulled the heavy doors open just as Detective Miller of the Chicago Police Department stepped off the elevator flanked by another detective and Victor Vance, Carter Ridge’s burly director of corporate security.

“Mr. Carter, I apologize for disturbing you at home at ten o’clock at night,” Detective Miller said, holding up a blue folder while Victor Vance craned his neck aggressively to peer past Daniel’s shoulder into the living room.

“At six-thirty this evening, Mr. Reed and Mr. Vance reported the theft of a fifty-million-dollar defense microchip from your sixteenth-floor vault by a night janitor named Elena Martinez, and when our unit arrived at her apartment on Eighteenth Street twenty minutes ago, her landlord stated that you personally assaulted him and drove off with the suspect in your Maybach.”

Behind the detective, Victor Vance barely concealed a triumphant smirk, clearly expecting the image-obsessed billionaire CEO to hand Elena over immediately rather than risk a scandal involving a lowly maid.

“First of all, Detective, her landlord was attempting an illegal midnight eviction against a disabled senior citizen and an eight-year-old child with acute bronchitis,” Daniel said evenly, keeping his tall frame squarely in the center of the doorway.

“And second, before you embarrass your precinct by executing a warrant based on fabricated evidence, I suggest we all look at the high-definition security footage Mr. Vance brought on his tablet.”

Detective Miller frowned and nodded to Victor, who eagerly tapped his security tablet and turned the screen toward Daniel.

“The camera inside your private vault corridor doesn’t lie, Mr. Carter,” Victor said smugly.

“Look at the timestamp: 5:48 p.m. tonight—thirty minutes before you left the building—Elena Martinez uses a cloned master keycard to exit your inner vault room wearing her gray winter coat with the frayed left cuff, carrying her faded blue lunch bag, and pausing at your executive coffee station before taking the service stairs.”

Daniel leaned in close to examine the high-resolution footage on the tablet.

In the video, a petite woman with dark brown hair twisted into a low bun, her face shadowed by a baseball cap and a surgical dust mask, walked out of the vault door wearing a gray wool coat frayed at the left wrist, paused for four seconds to rearrange the porcelain trays at Daniel’s coffee station, and hurried out the side door.

To anyone else on earth, it was an airtight, open-and-shut recording of Elena Martinez committing felony espionage.

Yet as Daniel watched that four-second clip at the coffee bar, a slow, lethal smile touched the corner of his mouth.

“Play the four seconds at the coffee station again, Victor, and zoom in three hundred percent on her hands,” Daniel ordered softly.

Detective Miller leaned over the tablet as Victor replayed the clip.

“Do you see what she just did at the coffee bar, Detective?” Daniel asked calmly.

“She straightened the trays so it would look like she was doing her normal cleaning routine,” Detective Miller said, puzzled.

“For three years—over seven hundred consecutive workdays—Elena Martinez has set up my executive coffee station with the black roast on the left, the sweeteners in the middle, and the creamers on the right,” Daniel stated, his voice cutting through the quiet foyer like cold steel.

“The woman in this video just placed the creamers on the left and the black roast on the right because she has never cleaned a single table in her life—and even more importantly, she used her left hand to move the carafe, whereas Elena is right-handed, and on her left ring finger you can clearly see the tan-line indentation of a three-carat solitaire diamond ring that was taken off five minutes before she put on a thrift-store coat!”

Victor Vance’s jaw went slack, the smug confidence vanishing from his face in an instant as Detective Miller grabbed the tablet out of his hands to verify the ring indentation on the zoomed image.

“Who on the sixteenth floor is five-foot-three, left-handed, and wears a three-carat diamond ring on her left hand, Mr. Carter?” Detective Miller demanded sharply.

Before Daniel could speak the name out loud, his smartphone buzzed with an automated security alert from the Carter Ridge central server: EMERGENCY BOARD RESOLUTION FILED BY VP OF FINANCE VICTORIA STERLING & COO MARCUS REED — CEO SUSPENSION & ASSET TRANSFER SCHEDULED FOR 8:00 AM.

Daniel looked up from his phone straight into Detective Miller’s eyes, realizing that Victoria Sterling—his own Chief Financial Officer and the woman his board had pressured him to date last year—had dressed up as his maid at 5:48 p.m. to steal the Aegis chip, and right now, she and Marcus were using that theft to strip Daniel of his own company by sunrise!
