Chapter 9 - The Final Vow
The loud gunshot rang out, and time seemed to freeze completely.
Mark gasped loudly and stumbled backward, clutching his left shoulder.
Bright red blood began rapidly blooming across his pristine white tuxedo shirt.
Arthur stood there, breathing heavily, preparing to take a final, fatal shot.
Sarah didn't hesitate for a single second.
She picked up the iron candlestick she had dropped earlier on the landing.
She rushed forward and swung the heavy metal object with every ounce of her remaining strength.
The iron collided heavily with the back of Arthur’s knees, sending him crashing to the floor.
The gun clattered away across the dusty stone tiles.
Sarah kicked the weapon over the edge of the open window, listening to it fall into the bushes below.
Arthur groaned in pain and tried to crawl toward the stairs, but he was completely defeated.
Sarah rushed over to Mark, who was slumped against the brick wall.
"Mark, stay with me," she pleaded, pressing a torn piece of her veil against his bleeding wound.
Mark offered her a weak, painful smile.
"I told you I was telling the truth," he whispered, closing his eyes.
Suddenly, the deafening wail of police sirens filled the air outside the church.
Red and blue lights began flashing violently through the open windows of the bell tower.
Eleanor knelt down beside her daughter and placed a comforting hand on her back.
"It is finally over, my brave girl," Eleanor said softly, tears streaming down her face.
Heavy boots pounded furiously up the wooden stairs as the police tactical team swarmed the room.
Officers quickly dragged Arthur away in heavy steel handcuffs.
Paramedics rushed in behind them, immediately tending to Mark and carefully placing him on a stretcher.
As Sarah followed the stretcher down the stairs, she felt a strange sense of absolute peace.

The nightmare that had haunted her family was finally coming to an end.
But as they reached the bottom of the stairs, Sarah realized someone was missing.
