Chapter 9 - The Betrayal

Anna stared at the blinking red light in sheer horror.

The tracking device was resting perfectly under Ethan’s seat.

It had not been dropped by accident.

It was carefully attached to the boy's expensive leather shoe with black tape.

"Victor," Anna whispered frantically.

She pointed a trembling finger at the device.

Victor followed her gaze.

His eyes widened in utter disbelief.

He lunged forward and ripped the tracker off his son's shoe.

He stared at it as it pulsed with a steady red glow.

"Julian didn't need to chase us," Victor realized with dread.

"He let us escape so he could find the city safe house."

Victor looked down at his seven-year-old son.

"Ethan, who put this on you?" Victor asked softly.

Ethan did not answer right away.

The young boy just stared at the dark water outside the boat.

"Was it Marcus? Did he put it on you in the ballroom?" Victor pressed.

Ethan slowly turned his head to look at his father.

There was no fear left in the child's eyes.

His expression was completely blank and unreadable.

"Nobody put it on me, Father," Ethan replied in a chillingly calm voice.

Victor froze completely.

"What do you mean?" Victor asked quietly.

Anna felt her blood run absolutely cold.

She instinctively pulled Lily further away from the boy.

Ethan reached into his small jacket pocket.

He pulled out a heavily encrypted satellite phone.

It was the exact same model that Julian used to coordinate the attack.

"I took it from Uncle Julian's desk last week," Ethan confessed casually.

Victor dropped the tracking device onto the deck.

"You helped him?" Victor gasped in betrayal.

"You helped the man who just tried to murder us?"

Ethan smiled slightly.

It was a cold and calculating smile that did not belong on a child’s face.

"He promised me I wouldn't have to wait for you to die to take over," Ethan stated.

Anna felt sick to her stomach.

This entire night had been orchestrated with the help of a seven-year-old psychopath.

Victor raised his hand as if to strike his own son.

He stopped himself at the last possible second.

"You are a monster," Victor whispered brokenly.

"I am a Moreto," Ethan corrected him sharply.

Suddenly, the deafening sound of helicopter rotor blades filled the air.

A massive military helicopter breached the fog directly above them.

A blinding searchlight pinned their small boat against the dark water.

The water around them began to churn violently.

Two heavy assault boats emerged from the mist and blocked their only exit.
