Chapter 3 - The Bloody Warning

The silence in the study was deafening.

Mr. Moreto stared at the radio in his hand.

Marcus was dead.

The only man who knew the details of the assassination plot had been silenced.

"Where is the body?" Mr. Moreto demanded.

"In the servant quarters, sir," the guard replied over the static.

Anna felt a cold chill run down her spine.

The servant quarters were where she and Lily lived.

Mr. Moreto looked at Anna with intense suspicion.

"Keep them locked in this room," he ordered his bodyguards.

He stormed out of the study to inspect the crime scene.

Anna paced the floor nervously.

She knew she was being framed.

Lily sat quietly on the expensive leather sofa.

She was swinging her short legs as if nothing was wrong.

"Mommy, why is the angry man looking at us?" Lily asked innocently.

Anna followed her daughter's gaze.

Lily was pointing at the large security monitor on the desk.

The screen showed the live feed from the servant quarters.

Mr. Moreto was standing over Marcus's lifeless body.

Blood was pooling heavily on the cheap linoleum floor.

Anna squinted at the dark screen.

There was something written on the wall in blood.

The camera zoomed in on the gruesome message.

It read, "The maid knows the truth."

Anna gasped and covered her mouth in horror.

Someone was intentionally pointing the finger at her.

The heavy study door suddenly swung open.

Mr. Moreto marched back inside with a gun drawn.

He pointed the weapon directly at Anna's chest.

"Who are you really working for?" he yelled.

"I swear I don't know anything!" Anna cried out.

She threw her hands up in surrender.

"My men found ten million dollars wired to a bank account in your name," he growled.

Anna shook her head in desperate confusion.

"I make minimum wage, sir," she pleaded.

"Someone set up that account to make me look guilty."

Mr. Moreto stepped closer.

"Why would a highly trained assassin frame a nobody like you?" he asked.

Anna looked down at her hands.

She knew exactly why.

It was because of the secrets her late husband had left behind.

Before she could confess, a massive explosion shook the mansion.

The reinforced windows in the study shattered inward.

Glass rained down on them like deadly snowflakes.

The security system began blaring a high-pitched siren.

An automated voice echoed through the house.

"Breach detected in the armory," the voice announced coldly.
