Chương 8 - The Price of Survival

Bullets tore through the air, completely shredding the overturned table.

Fine china exploded into dust, and expensive wood splintered around them.

Cassidy kept her head down, pressing herself flat against the plush carpet.

Dominic was hyperventilating beside her, clutching his head in sheer terror.

“They are going to kill us!” Dominic shrieked, all of his arrogant bravado completely gone.

“Shut up and give me your tablet,” Cassidy demanded.

Dominic stared at her as if she were insane.

“My tablet? We are under fire!”

“The escrow account is still open, and Victor wants that money,” Cassidy explained rapidly.

“If I transfer the funds back to you, he has no reason to keep us alive.”

She snatched the secure tablet from his trembling hands.

Her fingers flew across the glass screen, bypassing his security protocols with practiced ease.

She wasn't wiring the money back to Dominic's corporate account.

She was wiring the eighty million dollars into a series of untraceable offshore shell companies.

The gunfire suddenly stopped.

Heavy combat boots crunched over the broken glass, slowly approaching their barricade.

“Cassidy,” Victor’s voice echoed through the ruined dining room.

“There is nowhere to run in a penthouse.”

Cassidy took a deep breath and stood up slowly, raising her hands in the air.

She held the tablet up so Victor could see the glowing screen.

“The money is gone, Victor,” Cassidy announced clearly.

Victor’s men aimed their rifles at her head, waiting for the command to fire.

Victor checked his own phone, his face darkening as he realized his accounts were empty.

“Where did you send my money?” Victor demanded, his voice dangerously low.

“I sent it to a secure ledger that only I can access,” Cassidy lied effortlessly.

“If you kill me, that eighty million disappears forever.”

Victor stared at her for a long, agonizing moment.

He slowly lowered his hand, signaling his men to stand down.

“You are very bold for a waitress,” Victor noted.

“I want a deal,” Cassidy stated firmly.

“Give me the flash drive with my father’s files, and I will give you the decryption key for the money.”

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver flash drive.

He tossed it across the ruined room.

It landed perfectly at Cassidy’s feet.
