Chapter 9 - The Deadly Trade

Naomi wailed, thrashing against Vance's grip until he struck her across the face.

Adrian coughed up blood, his mind working furiously.

"Let the child go, Silas," Adrian gasped.

"I will give you what you want."

Silas chuckled and removed his boot from Adrian's chest.

"You are in no position to negotiate, fake blood."

Adrian slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out the bloodstained key and the silver drive.

He held them up in the dim light of the boathouse.

"These are useless to you without the retinal scan codes, and only I have those."

Silas narrowed his eyes, clearly doubting him.

"Bring the girl back," Adrian demanded, his voice steady despite the pain.

Silas nodded to Vance, who ordered the guard to return with a weeping Zuri.

Adrian slowly stood up, keeping his hands visible.

He looked at Naomi and gave her a nearly imperceptible nod.

Adrian walked slowly toward Silas, holding out the key and drive.

"Take it and leave them out of this."

Silas snatched the items from Adrian's hand with a triumphant grin.

"You always were too sentimental," Silas laughed.

Silas raised the rifle and pointed it directly at Adrian's head.

A deafening gunshot echoed through the wooden boathouse.
