Chapter 7 - The Smuggler's Route

Adrian shoved Naomi and Zuri down into the dark drainage tunnel just as bullets shredded the orchids above them.

He jumped in after them, pulling the heavy iron grate back into place.

The tunnel smelled of mildew and ancient concrete.

"My grandfather built these tunnels during Prohibition," Adrian explained quietly.

He clicked on his phone flashlight, illuminating a damp, stone corridor.

"It leads all the way past the estate walls to the old boathouse."

Naomi carried Zuri, her breathing ragged and panicked.

They hurried down the narrow passage, listening to the muffled shouts of mercenaries searching the greenhouse above.

The cold air bit through Adrian’s ruined linen suit.

They reached the end of the tunnel after ten agonizing minutes.

A massive, reinforced steel door blocked their path.

Adrian punched a four-digit code into the rusted keypad.

The keypad beeped green, and the heavy door groaned open.

Adrian stepped into the boathouse, ready to commandeer the speedboat.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

Sitting casually on a wooden crate was a man Adrian had buried three years ago.

His younger brother, Silas, smiled widely and racked the slide of an assault rifle.
