Chapter 3 - The Traitor Within

Adrian stopped breathing.

Vance had worked for the Vale family for fifteen years.

He was the man Adrian trusted to protect his life.

Naomi shielded Zuri's eyes with a trembling hand.

"She didn't take it, I swear," Naomi pleaded.

Vance stepped closer, raising the weapon.

"Then where is Katherine Vale's missing drive?"

Adrian gripped the small silver drive in his pocket tightly.

His mother had died in a tragic car accident six years ago.

Or so the police had told him.

Naomi sobbed quietly.

"I hid it in his closet because I knew you couldn't check there."

Vance laughed a dry, hollow sound.

"You have one hour to bring it to the greenhouse, or you both disappear tonight."

Vance turned and walked away down the corridor.

Adrian felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead.

His entire security apparatus was compromised.

He needed to reach the panic button in his private study.

He crawled further down the shaft, navigating the darkness with blind desperation.

He kicked open a loose grate and tumbled onto the floor of his study.

Adrian rushed to his mahogany desk and lifted the hardline phone to call the police.

The phone cord had been cleanly sliced in half.

A red laser sight suddenly appeared on the center of his chest.
