Chapter 5 - The Lion's Den

Leo’s private medical team quietly disposed of the three bodies long before the morning sun began to rise.
Emily spent the entire next day waiting in absolute, agonizing dread for Vincent’s inevitable retaliation.
But when she finally arrived for her afternoon diner shift, a massive black limousine was parked directly in front of the entrance.
Vincent Moretti was sitting in the plush back seat, slowly rolling down the tinted window as she approached the doors.
He did not look furious about his missing enforcers, nor did he look ready to kill her.
He looked incredibly intrigued, studying her face as if she were a fascinating puzzle.
Vincent firmly ordered her to get in the car, stating he had a lucrative business proposition for the only woman in Chicago who did not fear him.
Emily instinctively touched the fake pearl earring in her left ear, knowing Leo was secretly listening to every single word.
She climbed into the luxurious, leather-scented vehicle, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
Vincent directed the driver to a massive, heavily guarded high-rise building in the very center of the wealthy financial district.
He led her into a sprawling, opulent penthouse office that completely overlooked the glittering city skyline.
Vincent walked over to a crystal decanter, poured two glasses of incredibly expensive whiskey, and handed one directly to her.
He told her he desperately needed a new personal assistant.
He needed someone with enough raw nerve to tell him the brutal truth when his own men constantly lied to him.
He offered her a starting salary that would instantly solve every financial problem she had ever known.
Emily accepted the job immediately, flawlessly pretending to be swayed by the promise of immense wealth.
Vincent smiled warmly, stepping close enough for her to smell the rich, musky scent of his expensive cologne.
He leaned in closely and whispered that she was hired on one very specific, non-negotiable condition.
He reached up with lightning speed and violently ripped the pearl earring directly out of her ear lobe.

He tossed the tiny device onto the hard marble floor and crushed the hidden transmitter beneath his expensive leather shoe.
He looked her dead in the eye and casually asked how much his treacherous son was paying her to betray him.
