Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guests
Three massive men wearing heavy leather jackets stormed violently into the tiny apartment.
They were definitely not paramedics, and they certainly did not work for Leo Moretti.
Emily recognized the tallest man instantly from the terrifying encounter earlier that afternoon.
He was the silent, intimidating man who had stood by the diner’s jukebox while Vincent yelled at her.
Vincent Moretti’s loyal, brutal enforcers had tracked the treacherous son directly to the waitress's home.
The tall man raised a suppressed pistol and pointed it directly at Leo’s chest.
He stated in a monotone voice that Vincent was deeply disappointed to find his son plotting treason in the slums.
Leo slowly raised his hands in surrender, his arrogant, untouchable demeanor slipping for the very first time.
Emily realized with a sickening twist in her stomach that they were going to execute Leo right in her living room.
Once the ambitious son was dead, she and her mother would be murdered to eliminate the only loose ends.
She silently backed toward the kitchen counter, her trembling hand frantically searching for the heavy knife she had dropped earlier.
The towering enforcer stepped forward, preparing to put a bullet directly into Leo's head.
Emily grabbed the handle of the knife and threw it with every ounce of desperate strength she had left.
The heavy, spinning blade struck the enforcer’s wrist with a sickening crunch, sending his pistol clattering loudly across the floor.
Leo did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He swiftly drew his own concealed weapon and fired three rapid, deafening shots.
He dropped all three of the heavily armed intruders instantly before they could even react.
The apartment fell completely silent, the air growing thick and heavy with the acrid smell of gunpowder.
Leo calmly looked at the bleeding bodies, then turned his dangerous, calculating gaze toward Emily.
He casually wiped a fresh splash of blood from his cheek and let out a dark, genuinely amused chuckle.
