Chapter 9 - Checkmate

"You truly thought you could outsmart me, boy?" Genevieve sneered, stepping over the rubble. She looked genuinely amused. "You are nothing but a rat I pulled from the gutter. You have no power here."

Elias held Elara tighter, shielding her with his body. He looked at the guns pointed at him, then back at Genevieve. A slow, dark smile crept across his bloodied face. It unnerved Genevieve; it was a smile that didn't belong to a cornered animal.

"You're right, Genevieve," Elias said softly. "I don't have the power. But the feds do."

Genevieve frowned. "What are you babbling about?"

Elias tapped his earpiece. "Silas. Hit it."

Suddenly, every television screen, every monitor, and every phone in the building roared to life. Downstairs in the auction hall, the elite guests stopped in their tracks. Up on the screens, flashing for everyone to see, were pages from the Black Ledger. Bank accounts, murder coordinates, explicit blackmail material.

Everything was broadcasted. Elias hadn't just copied the ledger; he had set up a dead-man’s switch to broadcast it to every major news outlet and the FBI field office simultaneously.

Genevieve’s face went chalk-white. The icy composure finally shattered. "Shut it down! Shoot the screens!" she screamed at her guards.

But it was too late. The distant, growing wail of police sirens echoed through the city night. Not just a few—dozens of them. Helicopters thumped in the distance. The FBI was swarming the building.

Downstairs, the deli erupted into a warzone. The elite guests realized they were exposed and began turning on each other, drawing concealed weapons in a desperate bid to escape. The sanctuary of excess had become a bloodbath.

Genevieve looked at Elias with pure, unadulterated hatred. She raised her own silver revolver, aiming it right at his head. "If I go down, you die with me."

Elias stared down the barrel of the gun. "You took my parents. You took my childhood. But you will never take my sister."

Before Genevieve could pull the trigger, the floor beneath her violently buckled. Silas had detonated the vault charges directly below the penthouse hallway. The explosion ripped through the ceiling, a shockwave of fire and concrete.

Genevieve and her guards were thrown backward into the abyss as the floor collapsed, plunging them into the inferno below.

Elias shielded Elara, riding out the shockwave. When the dust settled, the hallway was gone. Only a gaping, smoking chasm remained where the Queen of the Underworld had stood.
