Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Elias needed leverage. He couldn't just run; Genevieve had politicians, judges, and hitmen on her payroll. She would hunt them to the ends of the earth. The only way to win was to destroy her empire from the inside.
He recruited the only person he trusted: Silas, an older, heavily scarred Hound who managed the vault's security grid. Silas was a cynic, but he hated Genevieve as much as Elias did.
At 4:00 AM on a Sunday, while Genevieve was attending a high-society masquerade, they bypassed the biometric scanners of her private office.
"You have three minutes before the thermal sensors cycle back on," Silas whispered through the earpiece. "Find the Black Ledger."
Elias tore through Genevieve’s desk. Hidden behind a false panel in the oak, he found it—a heavy, leather-bound book. He began snapping photos with a secure encrypted phone. Pages and pages of bribes, extortion, and murder contracts.
But as he turned to the section labeled 'Acquisitions - Hounds', his blood ran cold.
He saw his own name. But right above it, he saw two other names.
Arthur and Elena Vance. His parents.
Elias read the frantic, sprawling handwriting. His parents hadn't died in a random mugging in the slums. His father was Genevieve’s former chief accountant. When Arthur tried to take the ledger to the feds, Genevieve ordered the hit. She orchestrated their poverty. She orchestrated the night they walked into the deli.
It wasn't a coincidence. It was a sadistic game. Genevieve had murdered his parents, then enslaved their children just because she could.
The phone slipped from Elias's trembling hand, clattering against the desk. A blinding, deafening rage exploded in his chest. It wasn't just about escape anymore. It was about absolute, biblical vengeance.

"Elias!" Silas hissed over the comms. "Thermal sensors are sweeping! Get out of there!"
Elias grabbed the ledger, his eyes burning with unshed tears. He was going to burn L’Artisan Gourmand to ashes, and he was going to make sure Genevieve watched it happen.
