They slipped out the bathroom window just as the front door of the motel room was kicked in.

Gunfire erupted, shattering the thin glass windows of the motel. Cole returned fire, taking down one of the fixers in the rain.

"Keep your heads down!" Cole yelled, pushing Sarah and the kids toward a battered, matte-black pickup truck idling in the alley.

Sarah threw Maya into the backseat and climbed in, shielding the baby with her own body. A bullet pinged off the truck’s tailgate, missing her head by inches. Cole jumped into the driver's seat, slammed the truck into reverse, and smashed through a chain-link fence, tearing out onto the highway.

"Where are we going?" Sarah shouted over the roar of the engine.

"My safehouse is compromised," Cole gritted his teeth, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder. "They own the police. They own the judges. There’s nowhere to run."

"We aren't hiding," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "We're going back to the hospital."
