Chapter 1 - The Green Bin

The heavy metal doors of the service exit slammed shut behind Sarah, cutting off the sterile hum of the hospital. She was standing in the freezing, rain-slicked alleyway. The biting wind whipped through her thin cotton gown, but she couldn’t feel the cold. The only thing pumping through her veins was pure, unadulterated adrenaline.
"Over there," Maya whispered, slipping out from the shadows behind her mother. The nine-year-old pointed a trembling finger toward a row of massive industrial dumpsters.
Sarah sprinted toward the green recycling bin. Her bare feet slapped against the wet asphalt, slipping on slick patches of oil. She grabbed the heavy plastic lid and threw it back.
The bin was filled with broken cardboard boxes and shredded paper. For a terrifying, suffocating second, it was completely silent.
Then, she heard it.
A soft, muffled whimper.
Sarah dug frantically through the cardboard, her fingernails tearing against the rough edges. At the very bottom, wrapped tightly in a thin, blood-stained hospital blanket, was her son. He was breathing. He was alive.
She pulled him to her chest, collapsing against the side of the dumpster, sobbing violently as she pressed her face to his warm cheek. But the moment of profound relief was shattered instantly.

"Hey! Stop right there!" a deep voice shouted from the loading dock.
Sarah’s head snapped up. Two men in dark blue scrubs were jogging down the ramp, pulling heavy black flashlights from their belts.
