Chapter 2 - The Getaway

Sarah didn't think; she reacted. She was no longer a grieving mother; she was a cornered animal.

She grabbed a heavy, rusted iron pipe leaning against the brick wall. Holding her newborn tightly to her chest with one arm, she stepped in front of Maya.

The first man reached her, reaching out to grab her shoulder. "Lady, give me the kid—"

Sarah swung the iron pipe with blinding speed and savage force. It cracked against his knee, sending him crashing to the wet pavement with a howl of pain. The second man hesitated, his eyes widening at the sheer, terrifying ferocity in Sarah's eyes.

"Run, Maya!" Sarah screamed.

She grabbed her daughter’s hand and bolted down the alley, bursting out onto the chaotic, neon-lit streets of the city. The rain was coming down in sheets now. Horns blared. People stared at the barefoot woman in a hospital gown clutching a baby.

A yellow taxi was idling at a red light. Sarah threw the back door open, shoved Maya inside, and jumped in after her.

"Drive!" Sarah screamed at the terrified driver. "Just drive!"

As the taxi screeched away from the curb, Sarah looked out the back window. Standing under a streetlight, speaking frantically into a radio, was a woman in a pristine white lab coat. Dr. Evelyn Thorne. The head of the maternity ward.
