Chapter 9 - The Fatal Flaw

The final stretch was a massive, brutal uphill climb followed by a hairpin turn known as 'The Devil's Tooth.'
Damian pinned the throttle, determined to use the Bugatti's horsepower to crush Marcus on the incline. The midnight-blue car surged forward, the turbos whistling like jet engines.
But Marcus didn't chase him. He held back, watching the rear of the Bugatti.
Marcus knew something Damian didn't. When Marcus had tuned the car, he hadn't bypassed the thermal regulators to hurt the car—he had bypassed them to fix Chad's mistake. But he also knew that if a driver pushed the Bugatti at max RPMs for more than three minutes straight on a steep incline, the transmission fluid would boil.
Damian kept his foot to the floor. The Bugatti roared, but then, a loud, violent BANG echoed across the canyon.
Thick white smoke poured from the back of the Bugatti. Damian panicked, slamming on the brakes. The hypercar fishtailed wildly, sliding sideways before coming to a dead, mechanical stop just inches from the guardrail.

Marcus smoothly downshifted, drifting his matte-black sleeper beautifully around the outside of the hairpin turn, completely bypassing the smoking ruin of the multi-million-dollar masterpiece.
He crossed the finish line alone in the dark.
