Chapter 8 - The Escape

“Put your hands where we can see them!” a harsh voice boomed over a megaphone.
Nathaniel stepped directly in front of Claire.
“They tracked my car,” he whispered.
Detective Miller stepped out of the lead police cruiser.
“We got an anonymous tip about a black market transaction taking place here.”
Nathaniel turned his head slightly toward Claire.
“Take my car keys.”
“What are you doing?” Claire asked in a blind panic.
“I am giving you a head start.”
Nathaniel raised his hands in the air and walked toward the blinding lights.
“I stole the bracelet,” Nathaniel shouted to the armed police.
“I planned the heist for the insurance money.”
The officers rushed forward, violently tackling the billionaire to the wet pavement.
In the chaos, Claire slipped into the driver’s seat of his sports car.
She slammed her foot on the gas pedal.
The engine roared, and she smashed right through the chain-link fence.
She drove recklessly into the night, tears streaming down her face.
He had actually sacrificed his entire reputation for her.
She parked in an abandoned lot and pulled out the beautiful sapphire.
Under the dim dome light, the expensive gem looked strangely dull.
She scratched the surface of the stone with a metal hairpin.
