Chapter 4 - The Hidden Truth

Claire did not wait to find out who was lurking in the shadows.
She tightened her grip on Mia and ran down the stairs.
Her lungs burned as she sprinted into the alleyway.
She found a cheap motel two miles away and paid in cash.
Mia slept soundly on the lumpy mattress.
Claire sat by the window, staring out into the neon-lit street.
She pulled her phone from her pocket.
Her screen was cracked, but it still worked.
She opened the app connected to the cheap nanny camera hidden in her living room teddy bear.
The thieves probably had not noticed a toy from a thrift store.
She rewound the footage to the time of the break-in.
Two men in dark suits tore her living room apart.
They moved with frightening military precision.
One of them paused to answer a phone call.
He turned his face directly toward the hidden camera lens.
Claire gasped.
It was Marcus, Nathaniel’s trusted head of security.
Nathaniel had bailed her out just so his men could track her location.
He believed she was guilty after all.
The man on the screen hung up his phone and looked right at the teddy bear.
He reached out and smashed the lens.

The screen went black.
A heavy knock suddenly echoed on Claire’s motel room door.
