Chapter 2 - The Interrogation Room

The walls of the precinct were painted a depressing shade of gray.

Claire sat perfectly still in the metal chair.

Her hands were cuffed to the table.

Detective Miller walked in and dropped a plastic evidence bag in front of her.

The sapphire bracelet rested inside, mocking her.

“You have a clean record, Claire,” Miller said.

“I am a housekeeper, not a jewel thief.”

“Then explain why Evelyn Rothwell saw you near the vault.”

“I was getting extra linen for the spilled wine.”

Miller leaned over the table.

“Nathaniel Whitmore is refusing to press charges.”

Claire felt a sudden, sharp twist in her chest.

He still thought she needed saving.

“I do not want his pity,” she said.

“Well, you are going to need it.”

Miller pulled a magnifying glass from his pocket.

He pushed the plastic bag closer to her.

“The insurance appraiser just left.”

Claire frowned in confusion.

“The stones in this bracelet are glass.”

“What?”

“It is a brilliant fake, Claire.”

The detective crossed his arms.

“The real sapphire is missing, and you are the perfect decoy.”

Claire realized she was not just being framed for a simple theft.

She was the scapegoat for a massive heist.

The door to the interrogation room swung open.

Nathaniel’s high-powered lawyer stepped inside.

“My client has posted her bail,” the lawyer announced.

Claire stood up slowly.

She was free, but the trap had just closed around her.
