Chapter 4 - The Motel Siege

The neon sign outside the "Starlight Motel" flickered erratically, casting a sickly pink glow through the rain-streaked window of room 114. It was a rundown dive on the edge of the city limits, the kind of place that didn't ask for ID and didn't care if you paid in blood-stained cash.

Elias was sitting on the edge of the sagging mattress, methodically disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling a matte-black Heckler & Koch USP tactical pistol. His movements were mechanical, a muscle memory forged in hell.

Clara sat at the small, rickety desk, staring at the flash drive. "Do you think we can actually make it to the FBI field office in the morning?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"No," Elias said bluntly, sliding a loaded magazine into the grip with a sharp clack. "Thorne owns the routes into the federal building. If we walk in there, we'll be dead before we hit the metal detectors. We have to go to the press. A decentralized data dump. We put the ledger on the internet, make it public. Once it's out, Thorne has no leverage, and he'll be too busy running to hunt us."

Suddenly, Elias froze. His eyes darted to the window.

The heavy, rhythmic drumming of the rain had masked it, but his trained ears caught the faint, unmistakable sound of tactical boots crunching on the gravel parking lot outside.

"Get down. Now," Elias ordered, his voice barely a whisper.

Clara didn't hesitate. She threw herself onto the worn carpet, crawling behind the heavy oak dresser.

A split second later, the front window shattered inward in a shower of glass as a flashbang grenade was tossed into the room.

BANG.

A blinding white light and a deafening shockwave ripped through the confined space. Elias had already squeezed his eyes shut and opened his mouth to equalize the pressure. He rolled off the bed just as the wooden door was kicked off its hinges.

Three heavily armed Hounds rushed into the room, their assault rifles equipped with laser sights cutting through the smoke.

Elias moved like a shadow. He didn't fire from the floor; he launched himself upward, grabbing the barrel of the first mercenary's rifle and violently twisting it upward as the man fired, sending a spray of bullets into the ceiling. Elias drove the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple, instantly dropping him.

The second mercenary pivoted, aiming at Elias's chest. Elias used the falling man as a human shield, absorbing two suppressed rounds into the body armor of the unconscious Hound, before returning fire. Two precise shots to the center mass dropped the second attacker.

The third man hesitated, a fatal mistake. Elias lunged, closing the distance, and drove a vicious kick into the man’s knee, shattering it, followed by a swift strike to the throat.

The room fell silent, save for the ringing in Clara's ears and the groans of the dying men.

"We have to move," Elias said, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her to her feet. "That was just the scouting party. The rest of them will be here in sixty seconds."
