Chapter 2 - The Target on Her Back

The rain in the city was unrelenting, slicking the asphalt and reflecting the neon lights in fractured, bleeding colors. Elias drove a stolen, matte-black muscle car through the labyrinth of the industrial district, the heavy engine purring with a low, menacing growl.

Clara sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the passing blur of city lights. The adrenaline was finally beginning to wear off, replaced by a cold, creeping dread.

"You didn't have to break his hand," Clara said quietly, her voice barely carrying over the sound of the rain lashing against the windshield.

"If I hadn't, he would have dragged you into the basement of that gallery and you would have never seen daylight again," Elias replied, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror with practiced paranoia. "Arthur Thorne isn't a businessman. He's a butcher in a tailored suit. Now, tell me why he wants you dead."

Clara reached into the inner pocket of her sleek evening gown and pulled out a small, heavily encrypted flash drive. It caught the passing streetlights, glowing like a piece of radioactive material.

"I was his lead forensic accountant," Clara explained, her grip tightening on the drive. "I was hired to clean up his books, make his offshore shell companies look legitimate for the SEC auditors. But I dug too deep. I found a hidden ledger. Thorne isn't just dealing in illegal real estate and kickbacks. He’s running a massive human trafficking ring, funneling people through the shipping containers at the eastern docks. This drive has everything. Names, bank routing numbers, port authority bribes. It’s enough to put him in a federal black site for the rest of his life."

Elias took a sharp right turn, diving into a narrow alleyway to break their line of sight from the main road. He killed the headlights, letting the car roll to a stop in the shadows of a towering, abandoned warehouse.

"He’s not going to let this go," Elias stated, shifting the car into park. "By now, he’s mobilized the Hounds. They’re an elite private military contractor group. Ex-special forces, ex-cartel enforcers. They have the city's police chief on their payroll. We are entirely on our own."

Clara looked at him, her stoic facade finally cracking just a fraction. "Why are you helping me, Elias? You could have stayed in the shadows. You walked away from this life."

Elias looked at the flash drive, then out into the rain. "Because five years ago, Thorne sold a shipping container full of weapons to a warlord in the Middle East. Those weapons were used to wipe out my entire unit. I've been hunting him ever since. You just gave me the map."
