Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Empire

Elias hit the ground rolling, immediately drawing a combat knife and his sidearm. He was a whirlwind of lethal precision, fighting not for revenge, but for Clara’s life.

He shot the two mercenaries holding Clara, pulling her behind a heavy steel container for cover as the rest of the Hounds opened fire, lighting up the pier with tracer rounds.

"The detonator!" Clara yelled over the gunfire. "The timer is ticking!"

Elias looked. Three minutes left.

"Stay down!" Elias commanded. He stepped out from cover, moving with terrifying speed. He used the fog to his advantage, flanking the mercenaries, taking them down one by one in brutal, close-quarters combat. He was a force of nature, driven by years of suppressed rage and military conditioning.

He fought his way to the center of the pier. Only Thorne remained, backing away toward the spinning helicopter, his face pale with absolute terror as he watched his elite army dismantled by a single man.

Elias dropped his empty gun. He walked slowly toward Thorne, the fog swirling around his boots.

"Wait!" Thorne screamed, holding up his uninjured hand. "I have money! Billions! In offshore accounts! I can give it all to you! Just let me go!"

Elias didn't stop. He walked right up to the billionaire tyrant.

"You can't buy your way out of this," Elias said, his voice cold and hollow.

Thorne suddenly pulled a small, hidden derringer from his coat pocket, aiming it at Elias's chest. But Elias was faster. He grabbed Thorne's wrist, snapping it with a brutal twist, and drove a vicious punch into Thorne's jaw, knocking him out cold on the wet concrete.

Elias rushed to the VX canisters. The timer read forty seconds. He didn't know how to disarm a chemical weapon, but he knew how to destroy the triggering mechanism. He ripped the heavy wiring out of the detonator box with his bare hands, the timer freezing at twelve seconds.

The pier fell completely silent, save for the thrum of the idling helicopter.

Clara slowly walked out from behind the shipping container, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer destruction. She looked at Elias, who was bleeding from half a dozen cuts, standing over the unconscious body of Arthur Thorne.

In the distance, the wailing sirens of a dozen police cruisers and FBI tactical vans grew louder, cutting through the morning fog. The data dump had worked. The authorities were arriving.

Elias looked at Clara. "It's over. You're safe."

"Where will you go?" Clara asked, stepping closer to him.

May you like

"Ghosts don't stay in one place," Elias said softly. He reached out, gently wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek. "Tell the feds everything. Give them the drive. You're going to be a hero today, Clara."

Before she could say another word, Elias turned and walked into the thick, rolling fog of the harbor, fading into the mist just as the flashing red and blue lights of the police cars breached the pier. He had finished the war, and the ghost was finally ready to rest.
