Chapter 9 - The Confession

Chloe sobbed hysterically, her expensive clothes ruined and her face pale with absolute terror.
Evelyn watched from behind the stone pillar, completely paralyzed by fear, making no move to save her own daughter.
Richard pressed the blade harder against Chloe's neck, drawing a thin line of blood.
"I want a helicopter and five million in untraceable bonds," Richard demanded wildly.
Leo raised his weapon, his aim incredibly steady, but I gently pushed his arm down.
This was not how the Vance family legacy was going to end.
I pulled my smartphone from my pocket and connected it to the vineyard's outdoor speaker system.
"You aren't going anywhere, Richard," I said clearly, my voice echoing across the valley.
I pressed a single button on my screen.
The audio file from my pearl pendant began to blast at maximum volume.
Richard's own voice roared through the speakers: "Put your name on it right now, or I'll leave you crippled for the rest of your life!"
The sickening crunch of the iron poker hitting my shoulder played loudly for everyone to hear.
Then, I switched the audio to the recording I had just captured inside the tasting room.
Marcus's cruel voice filled the air: "That is exactly why I tampered with her oxygen machine at the hospice."
Richard froze, his eyes darting frantically toward the wounded lawyer bleeding inside the building.
The mercenaries he had hired lowered their weapons slowly, realizing they were now accomplices to a highly documented murder.
"The police are already at the gates," I informed him, the wail of sirens confirming my statement.
"You have absolutely nothing left."
Richard looked at the recording device, his grip on the knife loosening in sheer defeat.
Chloe used the momentary distraction to stomp her heavy heel directly onto his foot.
Richard howled in pain, dropping the knife as Chloe scrambled away toward Evelyn.
Leo's men instantly swarmed Richard, pinning him violently to the muddy ground.
The flashing red and blue lights of a dozen police cruisers illuminated the ruined vineyard.
Officers rushed the terrace, arresting Richard, Evelyn, and the bleeding Marcus Thorne without a fight.
I watched them drag my abusers away in handcuffs, a profound sense of closure washing over my exhausted soul.
Chloe stood near a police car, trembling and looking utterly lost without her mother's manipulation.
I walked over to her slowly, holding the property deeds they had forced me to sign.
I ripped the fraudulent documents directly in half, letting the pieces flutter to the ground.
"You get nothing from this estate," I told Chloe firmly.
"But I won't press charges against you, so take this second chance and disappear."
Chloe nodded weakly, tears ruining her perfect makeup as she climbed into a taxi.
Leo wrapped his warm, strong arm around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.
"It is finally over," Leo murmured, kissing the top of my head.

I leaned into his embrace, realizing that this fake marriage had become the most real thing in my life.
But as I opened my mother's journal, the first page wasn't written by her at all.
