Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Shadow

The armed guards lunged toward me with brutal efficiency.

Adrenaline masked the blinding pain in my shoulder as I desperately rolled backward.

I kicked the heavy glass coffee table directly into the shins of the closest guard.

The glass shattered into a thousand pieces, sending him crashing to the floor with a painful groan.

"Don't just stand there, grab her!" my father roared furiously.

I didn't wait to see if Evelyn or Chloe would join the fight.

I scrambled to my feet and sprinted toward the massive kitchen at the back of the estate.

Bullets tore through the expensive plaster walls, narrowly missing my head as I ran.

I crashed through the kitchen's swinging doors and barricaded them with a heavy stainless steel prep table.

My only way out was the narrow service door leading to the alley behind the property.

I threw the door open and bolted into the freezing, rain-soaked night.

My lungs burned with every breath, but the sound of heavy boots chasing me kept my legs moving.

I turned a sharp corner into a dark, dead-end alleyway, my heart sinking in utter despair.

The two remaining guards rounded the corner a second later, raising their suppressed weapons.

"End of the line, little rich girl," one of them sneered, taking aim at my chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, a sleek black Maybach silently pulled into the alley behind them.

The tinted window rolled down, and three silenced shots echoed through the rain.

The guards collapsed instantly, their weapons clattering uselessly against the wet asphalt.

The rear door of the luxurious vehicle swung open.

A man stepped out into the downpour, holding an umbrella over his impeccably tailored dark suit.

His sharp jawline and piercing gray eyes were instantly recognizable to anyone who read the city's financial and crime reports.

It was Leo Vance, the ruthless head of the city's most feared underground syndicate, and ironically, a distant, estranged cousin of my father.

"Get in the car, Clara," Leo commanded, his voice rumbling like distant thunder.

"Unless you'd rather wait here for your father's backup to arrive."
