Chapter 9 - The Siege

The deafening explosion threw me violently to the hardwood floor.
Thick gray smoke instantly poured through the shattered vents, filling the massive medical suite with a choking, sulfurous haze.
Aleandro was on his feet in a fraction of a second, pulling a heavy black handgun from a hidden shoulder holster beneath his sweater.
He grabbed my arm with terrifying strength and hauled me roughly to my feet.
"Stay exactly behind me," Aleandro ordered, his voice cutting through the blaring alarms with absolute, chilling authority.
Isabella was screaming rapidly in Italian, clutching the edge of her father-in-law’s medical bed as the room continued to shake slightly.
Dr. Vincent had cowardly scrambled under a heavy oak desk, completely abandoning his patient in the chaos.
I ignored my own panic and rushed to the Don’s bedside.
The old man was still heavily sedated, completely unaware that his penthouse was currently under siege.
I quickly unhooked his portable heart monitor and grabbed the emergency oxygen tank.
"We have to move him!" I yelled to Aleandro over the deafening noise. "The smoke will kill him before the fire does!"
Aleandro didn't hesitate. He grabbed one side of the heavy medical bed, and Marco, who had just burst back into the room covered in dust, grabbed the other.
"The main elevators are completely destroyed, Boss," Marco shouted, coughing heavily. "The blast came from the floor directly beneath us. It's a coordinated breach."
"The service stairs," Aleandro commanded, pushing the heavy bed toward the double doors.
We moved quickly through the ruined, smoke-filled hallways of the luxurious penthouse.
The beautiful cream-colored walls were scorched black, and expensive art lay shattered on the marble floors.
The sound of heavy automatic gunfire echoed up the stairwell, indicating a massive, brutal firefight was already raging below us.
"The Moretti family," Isabella spat venomously as we reached the heavy steel fire doors. "They finally made their move."
Aleandro kicked the heavy steel door open, leading our small, desperate group into the concrete stairwell.
"Mother, take Amanda and the Don down to the panic room on the fiftieth floor," Aleandro ordered rapidly, checking his weapon's magazine.
"What are you doing?" I asked, grabbing his arm as he turned back toward the burning hallway.
"I am going to completely slaughter the men who brought a bomb into my house," Aleandro growled, his dark eyes filled with absolute, murderous rage.
"You can't go alone!" I protested, terrified for the man who had just saved my life hours ago.
Aleandro paused, looking down at my soot-covered face.
He reached out, cupping my cheek with a surprisingly gentle hand.
"Keep my grandfather breathing, Amanda," he whispered fiercely. "I will come back for you."
He turned and disappeared into the thick black smoke, followed closely by a heavily armed Marco.
Isabella didn't wait for me to recover from the emotional farewell.
"Move, girl!" the matriarch commanded, grabbing the front of the medical bed and hauling it down the concrete stairs with surprising strength.
We painstakingly maneuvered the heavy bed down three flights of stairs, the sound of gunfire growing terrifyingly loud beneath us.
We finally reached the fiftieth floor, pushing through the heavy fire doors into a private, secure corridor.
At the end of the hall was a massive, impenetrable steel vault door.
Isabella rushed forward, frantically typing a long, complex code into the biometric keypad.
The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a fully stocked, state-of-the-art panic room.
We pushed the Don’s bed inside, and Isabella immediately hit the emergency lockdown button.
The heavy door slammed shut, sealing us completely in silence, cutting off the terrifying sounds of the war outside.
I collapsed against the wall, gasping for clean air, my hands shaking violently as the adrenaline began to fade.
I immediately checked the Don’s vitals, adjusting his oxygen flow and ensuring the frantic movement hadn't disturbed his fragile heart rhythm.
Isabella watched me work, her sharp eyes calculating and cold.
"You are surprisingly efficient under fire, Amanda," Isabella noted quietly, sitting on a leather sofa nearby.
"I told you, I'm a trauma nurse," I replied breathlessly, checking the IV lines.
"Yes," Isabella mused, her tone shifting into something dangerously calm. "But a trauma nurse shouldn't know the exact access code to a mafia panic room."
I froze, my hand hovering over the heart monitor.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, genuinely confused.
Isabella stood up slowly, pulling the silver pistol from her tailored jacket once again.
She aimed it directly at my chest, a cruel, triumphant smile spreading across her face.
"I never typed the code into the keypad, Amanda," Isabella stated coldly. "The door opened before I even touched the final button."
She cocked the hammer of the pistol, the metallic click echoing loudly in the small room.
"Someone else opened that door remotely from the inside," Isabella revealed.

Before I could comprehend her terrifying words, the door to the panic room's private bathroom slowly clicked open.
Stepping out of the shadows, holding a suppressed weapon, was Ryan, my abusive ex-boyfriend.
