Chapter 7 - The Don

I stood frozen beside the massive medical bed, staring down at the frail old man sleeping peacefully amidst the beeping monitors.
My mind raced frantically, trying to process the impossible coincidence.
Five years ago, I had dragged an unconscious, bleeding man from a burning Mercedes on the Long Island Expressway.
I had stabilized his neck, applied pressure to a severe laceration, and kept him breathing until the paramedics finally arrived.
I had never learned his name, and he had disappeared into the private hospital system before I could ever follow up.
Now, that same man was lying in a multi-million dollar penthouse, identified as the ruthless Don of the Raldi mafia family.
"You recognize him," Aleandro said, stepping silently into the room behind me.
I jumped slightly, completely startled by his sudden presence.
"It's him," I whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the sleeping patriarch. "He was the man in the car."
Aleandro walked to the other side of the bed, looking down at his grandfather with a mixture of deep love and lingering pain.
"Yes," Aleandro confirmed softly. "That was not a random car accident, Amanda. It was a targeted assassination attempt by a rival family."
My blood ran cold.
I hadn't just saved a random civilian; I had unknowingly intervened in a high-stakes mafia hit.
"My grandfather survived because of you," Aleandro continued, his dark eyes locking onto mine across the bed.
"Our entire syndicate survived because you didn't hesitate to run into the fire."
"You knew," I realized, feeling a sudden surge of betrayal. "When you offered me this job, you already knew who I was."
Aleandro didn't deny it. "My men have been keeping tabs on you for five years, Amanda."
"Keeping tabs on me?" I asked, my voice rising slightly in panic. "Why?"
"Because you saved the Don," he stated simply. "We owed you a massive debt. We wanted to ensure you were safe."
"Safe?" I laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that echoed awkwardly in the quiet medical room.
"I spent the last six months getting beaten black and blue by a drunk in Queens while your men supposedly watched? That's your idea of keeping me safe?"
Aleandro’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek.
"My men were explicitly ordered never to interfere with your personal life unless your life was in immediate, lethal danger," he said, his voice tight with suppressed anger.
"The moment my security detail reported the bruises on your arms... I fired the entire team for not intervening sooner."
He leaned across the bed, his intense gaze pinning me in place.
"That is why I 'coincidentally' found you on the subway last night, Amanda. I was coming to personally drag you out of that apartment."
The revelation completely knocked the wind out of me.
This terrifying, powerful mafia boss had orchestrated my rescue because of a debt of honor from half a decade ago.
Before I could process the gravity of his words, the heart monitor attached to the Don suddenly began to beep wildly.
The rhythmic green line spiked into a frantic, chaotic pattern, the alarm blaring loudly in the quiet room.
My professional training instantly overrode my personal shock.
I rushed to the side of the bed, checking the old man's airway and frantically reading the chaotic monitor screen.
"He's going into Ventricular Tachycardia!" I yelled over the blaring alarm, my hands flying over his frail chest.
"Marco!" Aleandro roared, the massive bodyguard bursting into the room in less than a second.
"Get the crash cart!" I commanded Marco, pointing to the red medical trolley in the corner of the room.
The old man began to convulse, his eyes rolling back into his head as his heart struggled to pump blood.
I ripped open his expensive silk pajama shirt, exposing his chest.
"Charge the paddles to two hundred joules!" I yelled at Marco, who was surprisingly efficient with the medical equipment.
I grabbed the heavy defibrillator paddles, yelling "Clear!" before slamming them down onto the Don's chest.
His body arched violently off the bed from the massive electric shock.
I looked frantically at the monitor.
The chaotic line flatlined for a terrifying second before jumping back into a steady, normal rhythm.
The blaring alarm ceased, replaced by the beautiful, steady beep of a stabilized heart.
I slumped against the side of the bed, my entire body shaking with raw adrenaline.
Aleandro was staring at me, completely awestruck by the speed and precision I had just displayed to save his grandfather's life for the second time.
"You really are incredible," Aleandro whispered, running a hand through his dark hair.
The massive double doors to the bedroom suddenly burst open again.
Dr. Vincent, the chief trauma surgeon, rushed into the room, flanked by two heavily armed guards.
"What happened?" Dr. Vincent demanded, rushing to check the stabilized monitors.
"Amanda just saved his life," Aleandro stated proudly.
Dr. Vincent checked the charts and the readouts, nodding approvingly at my quick actions.
"Excellent work, nurse," Dr. Vincent said, adjusting his glasses. "But this wasn't a natural cardiac event."
"What do you mean?" Aleandro asked, his voice instantly dropping into a dangerous register.
Dr. Vincent pointed to the IV bag hanging above the bed, which was dripping a clear fluid into the Don's veins.
"Someone tampered with his medication," Dr. Vincent revealed grimly. "This IV bag is laced with a lethal dose of digitalis."
Aleandro’s face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

Someone inside the heavily guarded penthouse had just tried to assassinate the Don.
And I was the only new person who had been alone in the room with him.
