Chapter 8 - The Accusation

The terrifying silence in the room was completely shattered by the heavy, ominous click of a gun being cocked.

I spun around to see Isabella Raldi standing in the doorway, a small, silver pistol aimed directly at my chest.

Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, devastating fury.

"I knew it," Isabella hissed, stepping into the room with lethal intent. "I knew we shouldn't have brought a stranger into this house."

"Mother, put the gun down," Aleandro commanded, stepping smoothly between me and the weapon.

"She poisoned him, Aleandro!" Isabella screamed, pointing the gun around her son's broad shoulders. "She was the only one alone in the room when the monitor went crazy!"

My heart hammered violently against my ribs, pure terror flooding my veins.

"I didn't do it!" I pleaded, raising my trembling hands in surrender. "I swear to God, I just saved him! Why would I poison him and then revive him?"

"To play the hero," Isabella spat venomously. "To solidify your position in this family. It's an old, pathetic trick."

Dr. Vincent stepped forward nervously, holding the tainted IV bag in his gloved hands.

"Mrs. Raldi," the doctor interjected cautiously. "The digitalis was injected directly into the sealed IV port. It would take a highly trained medical professional to know the exact dosage required to cause a fatal heart attack without immediate detection."

Isabella glared at me triumphantly. "She is a registered trauma nurse. She knows exactly how to do it."

"I was only in the room for five minutes!" I argued frantically, looking to Aleandro for help.

Aleandro did not move. He stood perfectly still, his dark eyes locked on my terrified face, searching for any hint of deception.

"Marco," Aleandro said quietly, never breaking eye contact with me. "Check the security cameras in the hallway."

Marco nodded and tapped his earpiece, communicating rapidly in Italian with the security room downstairs.

The tension in the room was absolutely suffocating.

If the mafia believed I had tried to assassinate their patriarch, I wouldn't just be fired.

I would be killed, and my body would completely disappear.

Marco suddenly frowned, his hand pressing harder against his earpiece.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice tight with concern. "The security cameras in the east wing were remotely disabled exactly ten minutes ago."

Isabella let out a harsh, cruel laugh.

"She planned it perfectly," the matriarch accused. "Kill her, Aleandro, before she tries again."

"No one is killing anyone in this room," Aleandro roared, his voice echoing like thunder across the massive suite.

He turned to his mother, his eyes blazing with absolute authority.

"Put the gun away, Mother. That is an order."

Isabella hesitated, clearly furious, but she slowly lowered the silver pistol, unwilling to challenge her son's absolute rule as the Don in front of his men.

Aleandro turned back to me, his expression entirely unreadable.

"Amanda," he said softly, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Look me in the eyes and tell me the absolute truth."

I looked up into his dark, searching eyes, tears of frustration blurring my vision.

"I did not touch that IV bag, Aleandro," I whispered, my voice shaking with raw honesty. "I would never hurt him."

He stared at me for a long, agonizing moment.

Then, he reached out and gently wiped a stray tear from my cheek with his thumb.

"I believe you," he stated firmly.

Isabella scoffed loudly in disgust. "You are letting your ridiculous infatuation with this stray cloud your judgment, Aleandro!"

"My judgment is flawless, Mother," Aleandro snapped back coldly. "If Amanda wanted him dead, she would have let him die five years ago in that burning car."

He turned to Marco, slipping instantly back into the role of a ruthless syndicate boss.

"Lock down the entire penthouse," Aleandro ordered. "No one leaves. Not the guards, not the staff, not the doctors."

"Yes, Boss," Marco replied, rushing out of the room to execute the order.

"Someone inside my trusted inner circle just tried to murder my grandfather," Aleandro growled, looking suspiciously at Dr. Vincent.

Dr. Vincent swallowed hard, taking a nervous step back from the dangerous mafia boss.

"Mr. Raldi, I assure you, my medical team has been completely loyal for a decade," the doctor stammered.

"We will see about that," Aleandro promised darkly.

Before the interrogation could continue, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the very foundation of the luxury building.

The crystal chandelier above the bed swayed violently, and the large windows cracked spiderwebs across the glass.

The emergency alarms instantly began blaring a high-pitched, terrifying warning throughout the penthouse.
