Chapter 1 - The Secret in the Envelope

The string quartet played a soft melody across the manicured lawn.
Eli stood at the edge of the venue, her fingers gripping a crumpled manila envelope.
Today was supposed to be the happiest day of her father's life.
Richard was finally moving on, ready to marry a beautiful woman named Vanessa.
Everyone said it was time for him to heal after the tragic car accident that took Laura, Eli’s mother, ten years ago.
But the piece of paper inside Eli’s hands told a completely different story.
She pulled the photograph out one more time just to be sure she wasn't losing her mind.
It was a picture of her mother, looking older but undeniably alive.
In the photo, Laura was holding up yesterday's edition of the New York Times.
Eli’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She had to show this to her father before he said his vows.
As she took a step toward the bridal suite, a cold hand clamped down on her shoulder.
Eli spun around and found herself face to face with the bride.

Vanessa smiled perfectly, but her eyes were like ice.
"I believe you have something that belongs to me, little girl," Vanessa whispered, her gaze fixed on the envelope.
