Chapter 7 - The Ghost of the Past

The voice echoing through the tunnel was familiar.
It did not belong to a Russian mercenary.
It did not belong to Anton Petrov.
Vincent slowly lowered his flashlight to illuminate the figure standing at the tunnel exit.
A man in a sharp black suit was smiling at them.
It was Dante Costa.
Vincent's older cousin, who had supposedly died in a boat explosion five years ago.
"You look like you have seen a ghost."
Dante laughed, a dry and hollow sound.
Charmian backed up against the muddy wall in sheer terror.
"You orchestrated this."
Vincent realized the horrific truth instantly.
"The Petrovs do not have the brains to breach my estate."
Dante casually pulled a remote detonator from his pocket.
"I needed them to create enough chaos so I could slip inside unnoticed."
He looked directly at Charmian.
"Thank you for providing the perfect distraction, sweetheart."
Vincent tightened his grip on his weapon.
"Why are you doing this, Dante?"
"Because you stole my rightful place as the head of this family."
Dante's eyes burned with genuine hatred.
"Now I am going to bury you beneath it."
Dante raised his thumb over the red detonation button.
Vincent did not have time to negotiate.
He raised his gun and fired blindly into the darkness.
The bullet struck the remote detonator, shattering it completely.
Dante cursed loudly and drew his own weapon.
Vincent tackled Charmian to the ground as a hail of bullets tore through the tunnel.
Mud and splinters rained down on their heads.
"Crawl!"
Vincent yelled, dragging her toward a side ventilation shaft.
They squeezed into the narrow pipe just as Dante reloaded his weapon.
They scrambled upward through the claustrophobic darkness until they hit a metal grate.
Vincent kicked the grate open, and they tumbled out onto the wet grass.
May you like
They were standing in the middle of a massive, forgotten graveyard.
Dozens of armed men were already waiting for them among the tombstones.
