Chapter 5 - The Sabotage

"Emil has worked for my family for twenty years," Lachlan whispered, staring at the monitor in profound betrayal.

"He must be working directly for Julian," Thea realized, her mind racing with the implications.

They could no longer trust anyone inside the Voss household, not even the people serving their meals.

Lachlan quickly wiped the security footage to prevent Julian from knowing they had seen the truth.

They spent the remainder of the night in a cheap, anonymous motel on the edge of the city.

Thea sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, exhausted but completely unable to sleep.

Lachlan sat beside her, gently taking her trembling hand in his.

"I am so sorry I dragged you into this nightmare, Thea," he said softly, his thumb tracing the back of her knuckles.

"I chose to sign those papers, Lachlan, and I am choosing to stay and fight with you," she replied fiercely.

The sincerity in his eyes made her heart flutter in a way she had never expected.

The next morning, they faked a minor illness to avoid returning to the main estate.

Lachlan arranged for a secure, rented car to take them discreetly to the hospital.

Thea needed to confirm that the offshore wire transfer had cleared and her mother's surgery was scheduled.

They walked into the sterile, brightly lit cardiac ward, maintaining their facade as the blind CEO and his devoted wife.

As they approached her mother's private room, Thea noticed the door was slightly ajar.

She peeked inside and saw a young nurse adjusting her mother's intravenous drip.

Thea recognized the nurse's face immediately from a photograph sitting on the desk in Emil's quarters.

It was Emil's daughter, holding a syringe filled with a strange, cloudy liquid directly over the IV port.
