Chapter 8 - The Test of Blood

The warehouse smelled of rust, saltwater, and overwhelming fear.

Carl was chained by his wrists, dangling precariously over a steaming vat of green, corrosive liquid.

His face was bruised and bloodied, and he was weeping uncontrollably.

Sadie stood on the metal catwalk, wearing a black trench coat Ronan had given her to fight the chill.

Ronan stood right behind her, his large presence acting as an impenetrable wall.

"Sadie, please, I'm sorry, I'll never touch you again!" Carl screamed, his voice cracking in terror.

She looked down at the man who had turned her life into a living nightmare for two years.

She remembered the broken ribs, the stolen money, and the endless nights spent crying on the bathroom floor.

She felt a brief, dark surge of vengeance, a desire to watch him suffer.

Ronan pulled a heavy silver revolver from his waistband and pressed it into her trembling hands.

"Pull the trigger, Sadie, and step into your new life," Ronan whispered in her ear.

She raised the heavy gun, pointing the barrel directly at Carl's chest.

Her finger rested on the trigger, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She stared into Carl's pathetic, begging eyes, and suddenly, the hatred evaporated into profound exhaustion.

She was not a murderer.

She would not let Carl's darkness turn her into a monster like the men standing around her.

Her hands shook violently, and she lowered the weapon, dropping it onto the metal grating with a loud clatter.

"I can't do it," she sobbed, turning away from the edge.

Ronan smiled, a genuine, terrifying smile, and picked up the revolver.

"I know you can't," Ronan said smoothly.

Without looking down, Ronan aimed the gun and fired a single shot into Carl's head.

The body went limp instantly, swinging silently above the steaming vat.

"You passed the test," Ronan told her, holstering the weapon.

"A real assassin would have killed him, but your mercy proves you are the perfect innocent heiress."

Before Sadie could process the twisted psychological game he had just played, the warehouse skylights shattered.

A dozen armed Volkov hitmen descended on ropes, firing automatic weapons wildly into the room.

Ronan threw himself over Sadie, taking a bullet directly to the chest as they plummeted toward the lower deck.
