Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal
The sprawling mountain estate was completely secure, surrounded by high concrete walls and dozens of armed guards.
The Volkov hit squad had been entirely wiped out, and their territory was currently burning.
Carl was dead, Thomas was dead, and the cycle of physical abuse that had defined Sadie's life was permanently severed.
She stood on the balcony overlooking the pine forest, wearing an elegant silk dress Ronan had provided.
She felt truly safe for the very first time in her miserable, fearful life.
Ronan stepped out onto the balcony, his chest heavily bandaged beneath a soft cashmere sweater.
He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.
He turned her around and pulled her into a passionate, consuming kiss, claiming her as his equal in this dark new world.
She melted into his embrace, believing she had finally found a protector, a partner, and a fortune.
It was a beautiful, flawless victory against the demons of her past.
Later that evening, while Ronan was showering in the master bathroom, Sadie walked into his dressing room to find his phone to order dinner from the kitchen.
She reached into the inner pocket of his ruined suit jacket, her fingers brushing against a folded piece of thick parchment paper.
Curiosity got the better of her, and she pulled the paper out, unfolding it under the dim closet light.
It was a page torn from a highly classified financial ledger, dated exactly two years ago.
It detailed a recurring, monthly cash payment of ten thousand dollars.
The recipient's name printed in black ink was Carl Jenkins.
Beneath the name, written in Ronan's unmistakable, elegant handwriting, was a chilling memo line.
The memo read: "Keep her broken."

Ronan had not been watching her suffer for six months.
He had been paying Carl to beat her for two years, orchestrating every ounce of her trauma just so he could play the savior and mold her into his perfect, dependent weapon.
