Chapter 4 - The Ambush

Damian threw himself backward as a bullet shattered the windshield of the SUV.

He pulled Clara down onto the floorboards just in time.

"Stay completely still," Damian ordered, shielding her body with his own.

The street erupted into a chaotic symphony of gunfire.

Preston Hale had not come alone; he had brought a heavily armed tactical squad.

"They knew we were coming," Damian realized, his mind racing.

"How could they know?" Clara cried out, covering her ears.

"Because someone in my organization told them," Damian growled.

He kicked the passenger door open and rolled out into the wet street.

Damian fired three precise shots, taking out the sniper on the warehouse roof.

His own backup team finally arrived, swarming the street in black vehicles.

A massive firefight broke out between the Vetti syndicate and Preston's hired mercenaries.

Damian moved through the crossfire with terrifying grace, his eyes locked on the loading dock.

Preston panicked as his men started falling around him.

He grabbed Walter by the collar and dragged the elderly man back inside the warehouse.

"Stay in the car!" Damian yelled to Clara one last time.

He sprinted across the pavement and breached the heavy metal doors.

The inside of the warehouse was dark, filled with towering crates and rusted machinery.

"It's over, Preston," Damian called out, his voice echoing in the cavernous space.

"You don't understand who you are messing with, Vetti!" Preston screamed from the shadows.

"I know you are laundering money for the Romanovs," Damian replied smoothly.

"The Romanovs are nothing," Preston laughed hysterically.

"I work for the Mayor of Chicago, and this money funds his entire reelection campaign."

Damian stopped moving, the weight of the revelation hitting him hard.

If the Mayor was involved, the entire police force would be against them.

Suddenly, a cold metal barrel was pressed firmly against the back of Damian's head.

"Drop the gun, Boss," a familiar voice whispered.

May you like

Damian recognized the voice immediately.

It was his own head of security.
