Chapter 10 - The Confession

Damian ignored the ringing phone, pulling Clara entirely into his arms.
He kissed her with a fierce, consuming passion that wiped away the terror of the past few days.
Clara melted against him, realizing she had fallen hopelessly in love with the most dangerous man in Chicago.
When they finally broke apart, the lobby was almost completely empty, save for a few federal agents securing the crime scene.
Walter stood a few feet away, awkwardly pretending to examine a broken marble pillar.
"You should probably answer that," Clara whispered, resting her forehead against Damian's chest.
Damian sighed and pulled the phone from his pocket, answering the secure line.
He listened for only ten seconds before a genuinely bright, rare smile spread across his face.
"They caught the Mayor trying to board his jet at the private airfield," Damian announced.
Clara let out a joyous laugh, throwing her arms around Walter in a tight embrace.
Over the next three months, the entire corrupt power structure of the city was dismantled.
Preston Hale and the Mayor were sentenced to decades in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Walter Bennett was fully exonerated and retired with a massive, state-funded pension for his wrongful termination.
Clara was offered her old job back, but she politely declined the position.
Instead, she accepted a highly paid role directing the legitimate, charitable wing of the Vetti family enterprises.
She spent her days helping people with Damian's vast resources, turning dirty money into real, tangible good.
Damian completely stepped away from the violent side of the syndicate, letting his trusted lieutenants handle the streets.
He spent his evenings cooking dinner with Clara in his massive penthouse, living a peaceful life he never thought he deserved.
It was a perfect, happy ending born from a terrifying, accidental confession.
One rainy afternoon, Clara decided to visit St. Matthew's church to leave flowers near the confessional booth where it all began.
She knelt in the empty pew, enjoying the quiet serenity of the beautiful building.
Father Michael approached her with a kind smile and handed her a sealed, wax-stamped envelope.
"A man in a gray suit asked me to give this to you directly, Miss Whitmore," the priest said softly before walking away.
Clara opened the heavy parchment and felt the blood instantly freeze in her veins.

The note was written in elegant calligraphy and contained only two terrifying sentences.
"Damian Vetti was always meant to be in that confessional, Clara. Welcome to the Romanov family."
