Chapter 8 - The Desperate Escape

Sadie screamed Callum’s name as he collapsed onto the loading dock floor.

He grit his teeth, refusing to let the agonizing pain slow him down.

He grabbed the bumper of the parked sedan and hauled himself up by sheer force of will.

Sadie grabbed his uninjured arm and pulled him into the passenger seat of the car.

She jumped into the driver’s seat, her hands slipping on the steering wheel as blood soaked her sleeves.

Dante emerged from the loading dock, raising an assault rifle toward the windshield.

Sadie slammed her foot onto the gas pedal with everything she had.

The sedan leaped forward, striking Dante in the leg and sending him crashing into a pile of garbage cans.

She tore out of the alleyway, the tires screaming against the wet asphalt as she merged into the midnight traffic.

Callum slumped against the dashboard, his breathing shallow and ragged.

He weakly instructed her to drive to an abandoned Catholic church in the warehouse district.

Sadie broke every traffic law in the city, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs.

They arrived at the decaying church twenty minutes later, hiding the bullet-riddled car behind a stone wall.

Sadie dragged Callum inside, laying him down on a dusty wooden pew near the altar.

She tore off her own trench coat and pressed it hard against the bleeding wound in his thigh.

Callum looked up at her, his storm-gray eyes softening for the first time since she had met him.

He told her she was the bravest woman he had ever known.

Sadie felt a sudden, unexpected warmth bloom in her chest despite the absolute terror of the night.

She realized she was falling for the ruthless mafia boss she had spent months trying to keep at a distance.

Callum promised her that if they survived the night, he would burn the Marcano family to the ground for what they did.

Suddenly, Sadie’s cell phone began to vibrate violently in her pocket.

She pulled it out and saw Liam’s name flashing on the cracked screen.

May you like

She answered it, only to hear her brother weeping hysterically through the speaker.

Liam screamed that the Marcanos had double-crossed him and strapped a bomb to his chest.
