Chapter 6 - The Blood Traitor

Sadie froze in the doorway, her mind completely unable to process the scene in front of her.

Liam looked up from the stacks of cash, his expression entirely devoid of fear or guilt.

He did not look like a hostage who had just been threatened with a bullet to the head.

He looked like a young man who had just won the lottery.

Sadie took a step forward, her voice breaking as she asked him what was going on.

Liam casually tossed a stack of bills onto the desk and leaned back in his leather chair.

He coldly explained that he was tired of living in poverty while she chased ghosts.

He had approached the Marcanos months ago and offered them the ledger in exchange for a seat at their table.

Sadie felt the breath leave her lungs as if she had been punched in the stomach.

Her own brother had set her up to be ambushed in the alley.

The Marcano boss laughed, a dry, grating sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

He complimented Liam’s ambition and thanked Sadie for delivering the final piece of the puzzle.

Callum stepped in front of Sadie, raising his pistol toward the older mafia boss.

He stated flatly that neither of them was walking out of this basement alive.

Liam shook his head and pressed a red button hidden underneath the mahogany desk.

A deafening siren instantly began blaring throughout the entire building.

Heavy steel shutters slammed down over the only exit door, locking Callum and Sadie inside the vault.

The Marcano boss smiled and stepped behind a section of bulletproof glass at the back of the room.

He told Callum that it was nothing personal, just a necessary shift in the city’s management.

From the ventilation shafts above them, a thick, white chemical gas began pouring into the sealed room.

Callum fired three shots into the bulletproof glass, but the rounds flattened uselessly against the reinforced surface.

Sadie fell to her knees, coughing violently as the toxic vapor filled her lungs.
