Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

Daniel froze completely as the bright red dot rested squarely between his widening eyes.
A deep, commanding voice echoed fiercely from the dark garden outside the broken bedroom window.
The unseen voice ordered Daniel to drop the weapon immediately or face a fatal, instantaneous headshot.
Daniel slowly lowered the pistol, letting it fall harmlessly onto the ruined carpet near his feet.
A tall, muscular figure climbed swiftly through the shattered window, holding a tactical assault rifle perfectly steady.
The man stepped into the dim bedroom light, revealing a scarred, rugged face I had never seen before in my life.
He quickly bound Daniel's hands tightly behind his back using heavy, industrial-grade plastic zip ties.
The mysterious stranger then turned his attention to me and calmly introduced himself as Marcus.
He claimed he was an elite private investigator officially hired by the life insurance company to track Daniel's movements.
Marcus explained that the massive three-million-dollar policy had triggered an automatic, high-level corporate fraud alert.
He had been secretly watching our isolated house through the surrounding trees for the past forty-eight hours.
I felt a massive, overwhelming wave of profound relief wash over my exhausted, trembling body.
Marcus carefully lifted me from the ruined bed and placed me safely into the seat of my wheelchair.
He told me we absolutely needed to leave the premises immediately before Daniel's other dangerous accomplices arrived.
We rolled quietly past the unconscious police officer and headed down the dark, silent hallway toward freedom.
As we reached the front entryway, the heavy front door swung open, and my sister Claire suddenly walked inside.
She saw Marcus holding the military rifle and immediately threw her empty hands high into the air.
Claire began crying hysterically, swearing that Daniel had physically forced her to participate in his evil, murderous plan.
Marcus did not lower his weapon for a second, his cold eyes staring intensely at my crying, pathetic sister.

"You can drop the innocent victim act right now, Claire," Marcus said with a dark, terrifying chuckle.
"She doesn't know about the millions hidden in the secret offshore accounts yet, does she?"
