Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

My stomach dropped violently into an endless abyss of betrayal and utter despair.
My own flesh and blood was actively conspiring with the man trying to aggressively murder me.
Daniel did not give me a single chance to scream or call for the helpful nurse again.
He quickly pushed a heavy syringe into my IV line, injecting a clear, burning liquid directly into my veins.
The sterile room immediately began to spin, and my vision blurred rapidly into deep, suffocating shadows.
I woke up many hours later in the master bedroom of our sprawling, isolated house in the woods.
The thick blackout curtains were drawn completely shut, blocking out every ounce of the afternoon sun.
My wheelchair was deliberately placed on the exact opposite side of the massive, empty room.
I was entirely trapped in this oversized bed, completely unable to move my paralyzed legs to escape.
Daniel casually walked into the room carrying a silver tray with a steaming bowl of hot soup.
He sat on the edge of the mattress and gently stroked my pale cheek with a terrifying tenderness.
He pleasantly told me that Claire was coming over later tonight to help take care of my final arrangements.
I flatly refused to eat the soup, knowing it was undoubtedly laced with heavy sedatives or lethal poisons.
Daniel did not forcefully feed me, he just smiled wickedly and set the tray on the wooden nightstand.
He left the room without a word, carefully locking the heavy wooden door from the outside with a loud click.
I desperately dragged my dead weight across the soft mattress using only my exhausted upper body strength.
I barely managed to reach the silver tray and intentionally knocked it forcefully onto the hardwood floor.
The ceramic bowl shattered loudly, sending scorching hot soup and sharp shards flying everywhere.
I quickly grabbed the largest, sharpest piece of broken ceramic and hid it safely under my soft pillow.
I heard the heavy lock click again, and the bedroom door slowly swung open into the darkness.

But it was not Daniel standing in the dim light of the quiet hallway.
A man wearing a black ski mask stepped inside the room, raising a silenced pistol directly at my head.
