Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

I held my breath in sheer terror as the masked intruder slowly approached the side of my bed.
He raised the heavy pistol higher, aiming the dark, cold barrel directly at the center of my chest.
My trembling fingers tightly gripped the jagged piece of broken ceramic hidden beneath my pillow.
Just as he placed his gloved finger on the trigger, the bedroom door violently slammed open.
Daniel rushed into the room like a madman and tackled the armed intruder to the carpeted floor.
The two men wrestled brutally in the dark, knocking over expensive lamps and smashing the bedside table.
The gun fired a silent, suppressed shot that tore harmlessly through the heavy velvet bedroom curtains.
Daniel managed to punch the intruder directly in the jaw, knocking him completely and instantly unconscious.
He stood up, panting heavily, and quickly pulled the black ski mask off the motionless man's bleeding face.
I gasped in absolute, unadulterated horror when I finally recognized the unconscious man on my floor.
It was the exact same corrupt police officer who had visited me in the hospital room yesterday.
Daniel looked at me, his face pale and dripping with genuine cold sweat from the violent struggle.
He frantically swore that he had no idea the rogue officer was planning to actually assassinate me tonight.
He claimed the corrupt cop was aggressively trying to steal the massive insurance payout entirely for himself.
I stared at my husband, desperately trying to figure out what was a manipulative lie and what was the truth.
Daniel reached down and slowly picked up the dropped, silenced pistol from the ruined carpet.
He checked the loaded magazine with practiced ease and then slowly turned his dark gaze back toward me.
"I really am sorry it has to end this way, Emily," he whispered, raising the gun toward my face.

Before he could apply pressure to the trigger, the large glass window directly behind him completely shattered.
A bright red laser sight appeared out of nowhere, resting directly on the center of Daniel's forehead.
