Chapter 7 - The Corrupt Badge

I froze completely, terrified by the blinding tactical lights aimed directly at our faces.
Nora slowly dropped the metal flashlight onto the marble floor and raised her hands in the air.
“We are the owners of this house, we just caught a trespasser upstairs!” Nora yelled over the roaring storm.
The lead officer stepped through the shattered doorway, his face twisted into a cruel, recognizable sneer.
It was Officer Miller, one of Grant’s closest childhood friends and a frequent guest at our summer barbecues.
“I received a 911 call about a violent home invasion,” Miller said, completely ignoring Nora’s explanation.
Brooke came running down the stairs, dramatically holding her bruised wrist and sobbing fake tears.
“They broke into my brother's house and violently attacked me unprovoked!” Brooke cried to the officers.
Miller nodded sympathetically to Brooke before turning his aggressive glare back to me.
“Lena, your husband warned me you were suffering from severe postpartum psychosis,” Miller lied smoothly.
He pulled a folded piece of paper from his uniform pocket and shoved it aggressively toward my chest.
“Grant filed an emergency temporary custody order in Miami, declaring you mentally unfit to care for a child,” Miller stated.
My blood ran completely cold as the true depth of Grant’s evil plan finally became clear.
He wasn't just trying to steal my massive fortune and my home.
He was using corrupt local connections to legally steal my newborn daughter.
“I am taking you into psychiatric custody, and the state will be collecting the infant immediately,” Miller ordered, reaching for his handcuffs.
“You will do no such thing without a federal warrant,” a sharp, authoritative voice echoed from the porch.
Rachel stepped through the shattered doorway, holding her glowing cell phone high in the air.
“I have the district attorney and the internal affairs duty captain on a live conference call right now,” Rachel bluffed brilliantly.
Officer Miller hesitated, his arrogant confidence instantly shattering at the threat of federal oversight.
“If you lay a single finger on my client, I will personally see you ruined and imprisoned for civil rights violations,” Rachel threatened.
Miller slowly lowered his handcuffs, realizing he could not easily bully a high-powered corporate attorney.
We used his momentary hesitation to push past the officers and sprint directly to Nora’s waiting SUV.

As we sped away from the nightmare mansion, my phone suddenly buzzed with a catastrophic alert.
Grant had just used a hidden joint-business loophole to completely freeze every single one of my bank accounts.
