Chapter 9 - The Collapse

The fallout was catastrophic and immediate.
As the police slapped handcuffs on Madeline, she completely broke down, turning on everyone to save herself.
“It was Chloe!” Madeline shrieked, struggling against the officers. “Chloe told me to do it! She said Clara was going to ruin my life! My dad paid the cops, I didn't do it alone!”
Richard closed his eyes, accepting his fate in humiliating silence as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. His empire, his reputation, and his freedom were entirely gone.
Julian watched them being escorted out of the ballroom, the flashbulbs of society photographers capturing every second of their disgrace.
He didn't feel triumphant. He just felt an overwhelming, crushing wave of exhaustion. He had dedicated two years of his life to a singular, toxic goal, and now that it was over, the void Clara left behind felt deeper than ever.
He walked out of the country club and into the cool night air. Eleanor and Arthur were waiting by their car in the parking lot.
When Eleanor saw her son, she didn't ask questions. She simply opened her arms.

“It’s over, Julian,” Eleanor whispered, stroking his hair. “It’s finally over.”
