Chapter 2 - The Guest Room Confession

Down the hall, the guest room was suffocatingly quiet. Eleanor stood outside the door, her hand resting on the brass knob. Her maternal instinct—the one that had adored Madeline for two years—was at war with the horrifying truth her son had just revealed.

She opened the door.

Madeline was sitting on the edge of the bed, her expensive silk gown now a wrinkled mess. When she saw Eleanor, she immediately burst into tears, playing the victim with terrifying perfection.

“Eleanor, please,” Madeline wept, reaching out. “You have to help me. Julian has lost his mind. He locked the door and told me he was going to destroy my life. He’s sick. We need to call the police!”

Eleanor didn't move to comfort her. She stood by the door, studying the girl she had once called her daughter.

“He told us about Clara,” Eleanor said softly.

Madeline’s tears stopped instantly. The transformation was chilling. The trembling, terrified bride vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating woman whose eyes narrowed into absolute daggers.

“He’s delusional,” Madeline said, her voice completely steady now. “Clara was a depressed, paranoid girl who drove her own car off a cliff. Julian is just looking for someone to blame.”

“He has the private investigator’s files, Madeline,” Eleanor bluffed, testing the waters.

Madeline scoffed, standing up and crossing her arms. “Files? What files? If he had actual proof, I’d be in jail. Not wearing a quarter-million-dollar ring. He has nothing but theories, Eleanor. And if he tries to drag my family’s name through the mud, my father’s lawyers will crush him. They will ruin your entire family.”

Eleanor felt a cold sweat break out on her neck. Madeline wasn't just guilty; she was untouchable, and she knew it.

“You won't get away with this,” Eleanor whispered.

“I already have,” Madeline smirked. “Now, be a good mother-in-law and fetch me my phone. I’m calling my father.”
