Chapter 6 - The Broken Glass

The black SUVs idled aggressively, trapping us in the center of the icy street.

Aunt Susan cursed loudly and tried desperately to restart the station wagon.

The engine just clicked uselessly.

Four men in dark suits stepped out of the vehicles and surrounded our car.

The back door of the lead SUV opened slowly.

My mother, Eleanor, stepped out wearing a luxurious fur coat.

She walked up to my window and tapped gracefully on the glass with her diamond ring.

She smiled and ordered me to unlock the doors.

I squeezed Lily against my chest and refused to look at her.

My mother lost her patience and nodded to one of the security men.

The man pulled a heavy metal baton from his belt.

He smashed it directly into the passenger side window.

Glass shattered everywhere, raining down onto my lap and the diaper bag.

Susan screamed and reached for her own door handle, but another man pinned it shut.

The man with the baton reached through the broken window to unlock my door.

I didn't think about the consequences.

I pulled the revolver from my coat pocket and aimed it directly at his face.

The man froze instantly, dropping his baton onto the snowy street.

My mother gasped in pure shock, taking several steps back toward her vehicle.

I yelled at them to back away from the car right now.

Susan finally managed to get the engine to turn over with a loud roar.

She threw the car into reverse, smashing hard into the SUV behind us.

The impact created just enough space for us to swerve around them.

We sped down the road, leaving my mother screaming in the street.

I put the gun away and turned to check on my baby.

My blood ran completely cold.

Lily was completely silent, her tiny face turning a terrifying shade of blue.
